Altar Call by Mike Monson now up at Slit Your Wrists (SYW) Magazine

24 Dec

Here it is. Altar Call, new story by me. (Forgot to mention — this story is graphic and is rated NC-17)

At 2:30 this morning I FB messaged Laramore Black, the editor of SYW, and told him to read the two stories I’d recently submitted. He read one of them, Altar Call, and then accepted it and now it is up.

Then, we chatted for about two hours. Did you know he is only 21? Interesting and charming guy. He has a story up at the Flash Fiction Offensive — Tommy Boy. Read it and then comment about it, I bet he’d like that.

What else is new? Joe Clifford signed with agent Elizabeth K. Kracht of Kimberly Cameron and Associates for his big novel Lamentation. Congratulations to Joe and Elizabeth both. The book will now be sold to a big publisher and Joe will go on book tours and will be on tv and stuff and Junkie Love and Wake the Undertaker will also become huge. One of the cool things I think about this is that Ms. Kracht’s offices are in Tiburon. Can you imagine having a meeting with your agent in fucking Tiburon? How cool is that? I bet she has a great view.

Oh, also, Joe had a huge hand in the editing and final shaping of Altar Call. I tried to give him my American Telecaster as a thank you gift but he refused.

Also, it became clear yesterday during a long writing session that the thing I’m working on that I’m calling a NOVEL is not a novel. Novels are around 60,000 to 300,000 words or something like that, and novellas are 20,000 to 50,000 I guess. My piece is at 12,000 and it is done except for a lot of editing. I had thought that the big event that I was treating as the middle is actually the end.

So, I think I will like what I have but it won’t be some big deal. I’m certainly going to finish it but I have no idea how it will enter the world. I like it though. It’s been fun to write. I’m excited about tweaking it. Also, it’s about a meditating cat-loving killer bank robber trying to get revenge on his wife and his partner who stole all his money and ran off together and have embarked on a pyscho-sexual-inspired killing spree and it all takes place in Modesto — so there probably isn’t a huge market for such a thing.
